WALD

By Right Way Down

Experimenting with the absurdity of reality upturned, you are invited to see the world the right way down

They appear here as an unlikely collective of only hand balancers. By transforming a circus discipline with a strong solo tradition into a common ensemble performance instead, the six members cultivate a new expression together. Here a forest of human bodies sprouts, where the bodies become trunks and the legs and arms branch.

True to its name, Wald reflects the forest. The evolution, growth, decay, death and rebirth of nature and what happens to it when touched by the human hand.

As saplings search for light, in an arguably bleaker time for the natural world, we explore the cyclical nature of a changing habitat.

We use handstands as our medium to create imagery and collage on stage. Within our world we pose questions in relation to nature’s ability to balance itself towards harmony and our capacity to manipulate or even halt its progress. Right Way Down is a collective of six hand balancers whose work tampers with the common definition of circus.

Each member is a graduate from University of the Arts in Stockholm (DOCH). Having spent three years at university and a whole career on their hands, they come together to create Wald; a world inhabited by inversion and upside-down expression.
